With a population of a little over 125,000, the city of Topeka, KS is the capital of the state of Kansas and a popular tourist destination for visitors from the region. Apart from its historical sights, landmark buildings, and monuments, Topeka is also an excellent base for camping trips and weekend adventures to nearby state parks and nature reserves. Perry State Park
Located just 20 miles northeast of downtown Topeka, Perry State Park is one of the nearest spots for locals to get away from the city and enjoy various recreational activities surrounded by nature. Getting here takes about 20 minutes by car along route US-24 E, making it an excellent destination for a weekend escape with friends or family. Some of the most popular activities in the area include hiking, swimming, fishing, boating, and camping.
For those planning to stay the night at Perry State Park, there are 132 different campsites ranging between primitive spots and fully equipped ones. There are also wooden cabins for those wanting some extra comfort, as well as RV parking sites with electric hook-ups, running water, picnic tables, public grills, and vault toilets. All campsites can be booked by phone or online at the website of Perry State Park.
Clinton State Park
With a total area of a little over 1,500 acres, Clinton State Park was established in 1975 and is managed by the Kansas Department of Wildlife Parks and Tourism. A popular spot for fishing, hiking, boating, and mountain biking, this state park is a great destination to get away from the routine and go on memorable camping trips. The place features primitive camping sites, as well as fully equipped RV parking spots.
Although the Clinton State Park campsites do not require reservations, visitors are advised to book in advance if they want to have a specific site. The larger “Prime Sites” feature running water, well-maintained restrooms, grills, and 50amp electric service, while the “Utility Campsites” feature only water and regular electric plugs. Getting to the campsites from downtown Topeka takes a little over 20 minutes by car, driving southeast along route I-70.
Eisenhower State Park
Eisenhower State Park is located on the shores of Lake Texoma and has a total area of a little under 425 acres and was established in 1954. Getting here from downtown Topeka takes just 50 minutes by car, making it an excellent destination for camping and other outdoor activities, including hiking, fishing, picnicking, and birdwatching. The campsites feature picnic tables, electric hook-ups, running water, a fire ring, and public grills.
